Northwood Housing (2022 - 2023)

This program is an HIV education program that will teach community member about HIV facts, as well as how to fight HIV stigma as a community. There will be food at this program.

Bring your ESA for a fun filled get-together with other community members. Come out and socialize, meet other folks, and have a great time with everyone's ESA!

Residents who want to get to know each other can do so! This is a great way for them to engage and be active while the weather is nice

Outdoor experience, Campus Exploration, Stress Relief. The Nichols Arboretum has often been regarded as an immersive means of stress relief for students, faculty and patients of the Michigan Health System. As both an enjoyer and one who has worked there in the past, I plan to guide a group of residents through the Arb and point out interesting bits to encourage them to come back in the future.

Explore Ann Arbor and engage in activities for all ages. 

Have families get to know one another and their children. Provide fun family-friendly activities. Student parents need and want activities they can do in the community with their children.

The nature walk is a community favorite! We will walk slowly to the Stapp Nature Area

Opportunity for Northwood IV residents to meet each other and to visit the Community Center space. 

This is a fun opportunity for residents to engage via video games and board games!

This is an annual event that welcomes all residents of Northwood before the school year starts! Please join us for some food and conversation!

This breakfast will take place on the first day of classes! It is a great way to kick off the term right and an opportunity to meet other residents on the first day of school!

Come for join us to celebrate mid-autumn festival (mooncake festival) that symbolizes a family reunion when the moon is at its fullest. There will be crafts, potstickers, and almond cookies for everyone to try! 

Celebrate back to school and kick off the new year by bringing any gently used and unwanted school supplies and swapping with other families! Some examples include: folders, pencils, crayons, workbooks, notebooks, etc. Pizza will be provided! 

This is a great program to allow residents to explore their own culture or a new culture in a fun, active, and informative way.

An avenue for community members to socialize and meet new people while also take a refreshing break from studies. 

Join us for some crafts and conchas (Mexican sweet bread) to celebrate Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Many Latin American countries celebrate el Día de Los Muertos to honor the loved ones that have passed. People go to the cemetery and bring offerings like flowers and food to the graves of family and friends as a way to remember them. Decorating altars with colorful flowers and candles and cooking delicious food for the special day are all integral to the Day of The Dead festivities.  Please send any questions to RA Cassandra at carroyo@umich.edu.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with a live introduction to the lunar-solar calendar, China's space program, star mythology, and Chinese new year customs from new moon to full moon. The key to understanding the calendrical system of Stems and Branches, the Five Elements and the Zodiac will be introduced through dome visuals and animation. Enjoy what to find in the nighttime sky and for the weeks ahead as Year of the Rabbit graces the calendar year.

The newly renovated state-of-the-art Planetarium & Dome Theater at the U-M Museum of Natural History transports visitors beyond distant stars and back in time from the comfort of reclining seats. 

Tickets will be provided FREE by Northwood and are first come first served. We will be taking the bus from 1000 McIntyre but if you are also welcome to travel on your own to the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History (1105 N University Ave, Ann Arbor, MI 48109). This is a public event so please arrive on time. If you arrive late you will not be allowed to enter the show.

Mindfulness and self-compassion combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing—being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. Self-compassion involves responding to these difficult thoughts and feelings with kindness, sympathy and understanding so that we soothe and comfort ourselves when we’re hurting. Research has shown that self-compassion greatly enhances emotional wellbeing. It boosts happiness, reduces anxiety and depression, and can even help maintain healthy lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise. Being both mindful and compassionate leads to greater ease and well-being in our daily lives.

A RecSports teacher will guide students through a new set of yoga poses. Focusing on the essential components of breath and alignment, students will spend more time holding each pose, focusing on building stamina and flexibility. This class is great for beginners as well as experienced students. It will take place in the Northwood Community Center. Please bring a mat or towel if needed.
