Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) overturned decades of precedent set by Roe v. Wade (1973), ending federal protection to abortion access across the United States and returning the power to regulate abortion to the states. Since the Dobbs Decision, some states have banned abortion entirely or enacted bans that start after a certain number of weeks. Meanwhile, other states have passed ballot initiatives or legislation to protect access to abortion. Several states will have ballot initiatives relating to abortion during the 2024 general election.

During elections, a lot of attention is focused on races for the federal government. Coverage of presidential candidates and competitive Senate and Congressional races will dominate news coverage relating to the election. Less attention will be paid to the numerous elected offices at the state and local levels, and it can often be more difficult to find information about candidates running for these offices. However, these offices are important and often have more of an impact on communities than federal offices.

Every year tens of thousands of people in the United States die from gun violence. The Second Amendment states, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” However, advocates for and against stricter gun policy have argued over the interpretation of the Second Amendment and to what extent the government can regulate firearms. Over the years, the federal and state governments have passed legislation in an attempt to address the problem of gun violence, but it remains an issue.

The United States has had two major political parties for most of its existence. During elections, a lot of attention is focused on races for the federal government. Coverage of presidential candidates and competitive Senate and Congressional races will dominate news coverage relating to the election. Less attention will be paid to the numerous elected offices at the state and local levels, and it can often be more difficult to find information about candidates running for these offices. However, these offices are important and often have more of an impact on communities than federal offices.

These laws have changed over time to both restrict and expand voting access. But voting access doesn’t just apply to who can vote, it also applies to who will vote and the different barriers people face when trying to cast their ballot.

Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (2022) overturned decades of precedent set by Roe v. Wade (1973), ending federal protection to abortion access across the United States and returning the power to regulate abortion to the states. Since the Dobbs Decision, some states have banned abortion entirely or enacted bans that start after a certain number of weeks. Meanwhile, other states have passed ballot initiatives or legislation to protect access to abortion. Several states will have ballot initiatives relating to abortion during the 2024 general election.

The judicial branch of the government is just as important as the executive and legislative branches. Judges rule on criminal and civil cases and interpret the laws. Federal judges are nominated by the President and approved by the Senate. In the states, judges may be appointed or elected. In Michigan, we get to vote for State Supreme Court justices, and this year there are two seats open on the court.

Dinners for Democracy are nonpartisan presentations and small group discussions on topics students care about hosted by the student organization, Turn Up Turnout (TUT). Every year tens of thousands of people in the United States die from gun violence. The Second Amendment states, “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” However, advocates for and against stricter gun policy have argued over the interpretation of the Second Amendment and to what extent the government can regulate firearms. Over the years, the federal and state governments have passed legislation in an attempt to address the problem of gun violence, but it remains an issue.
