Northwood Resident Advisor Events 2021-2022

This outside class will be taught by a trained yoga instructor. It will combine yoga poses (asanas) with breathing exercises (pranayama) to help align and calm your body, mind, and spirit in preparation for meditation. Hatha can be translated to mean balance or literally “sun” (ha) and “moon” (tha). Traditional asanas are held in accurate alignment. It develops strength, flexibility, endurance, and steadiness, bringing greater balance on all levels (body, mind and spirit). Modifications are offered to accommodate all skill levels.

Since it will be outside, please bring water and a towel or yoga mat for the grass. In case of never ending rain, this event will be rescheduled. 

This event is fun for all! Come make giant bubbles with RA Meredith at 7pm on July 10th at the CC lawn.

Well-being is a life-long journey. During this social hour you'll get the chance to speak with University of Michigan's Wellness Coach Joy Pehlke (and former Northwood resident) to learn about resources and support that are available to Northwood residents to live more balanced and fulfilling lives. We'll have pizza and limited giveaways (paint kits, journals, etc) for those that arrive early.

It’s Summer Carnival Time!

Welcome to the Carnival! Come play a variety of games (cornhole, ring toss, limbo, fishing game, etc.), win prizes, get your arm/leg painted/"tattoed", make bracelets and crafts, enjoy music, bubbles, snacks, make balloon animals, and get into the summer vibe with the Northwood team!

Everyone is welcome at the carnival - both adults and families. Snacks will be provided (cookies, popsicles, popcorn, fruit, drinks)!

The Office of Campus Sustainability will be giving their Where to Throw presentation about:

• what gets recycled and composted at UM (what doesn't get recycled/composted - glass, tape, etc)
• their speciality recycling programs (bottle caps, oral care products, writing utensils, etc)
• how to make in-person events more sustainable (Zero Waste events)
• free promotional materials that provide education on sustainability (magnets, stickers, posters)

Kickstart the fall semester with a fun game of cornhole while indulging in some delicious cookies! This will be a great way to meet new residents and interact with one another! We will gather by the field at the corner of Cram Circle and Bishop St at 5pm. See you there!

Ditch the traditional workout and join the party! This Latin-inspired, dance-and-fitness class offers an exciting, exhilarating and effective workout. You’ll develop your stamina and your body tone with easy to follow dance moves, set to the fast and slow rhythms of cumbia, merengue, salsa, reggaeton, hip-hop, pop, mambo, rumba, flamenco, calypso and salsaton. No dance experience required. This free class will be taught by a trained instructor.

1 can of pumpkin puree

1 cup of milk  (dairy or dairy free) - I use oat milk

cinnamon

1 egg or cornstarch if vegan

1 stick of butter (or vegan butter) - I use olive oil vegan butter

2 cups of flour (any kind)

Recommended ingredients: ground cloves, ground nutmeg, and/or ground all spice

Register to enter into a Halloween door decorating contest throughout Northwood! You can decorate your front door in fall/Halloween theme, and then the RA team will select finalists based on creativity. We will post pictures of the finalist doors on the Northwood Facebook page to determine a winner! Everyone who enters will receive some Halloween candy, with more going for the winners.

Come hang out with RA Tasmine and other Northwood neighbors as we shuttle to and from the local Kroger supermarket on Plymouth. This is a great opportunity if you need to go to the supermarket but you don't have a car - you'll save time walking to Kroger and back home and you'll be in a warm free car ride. Tasmine knows how hard it is to carry groceries from Kroger in the cold - stuffing things in a backpack and having fingers freeze up!

Be prepared to also learn about money saving opportunities at Kroger with your smartphone. 

Based on interest, Tasmine will spend one hour driving back and forth to Kroger and throughout Northwood I/II, IV, and V. She will send out more detailed information about timing and the route during the days leading up to the event. Masks will be required in the van.

Continuing with this semester's Northwood Mental Health Series, come join your community with a "Coffee & Tea Tasting Night!". With a wide variety of herbal teas and some coffee to choose from, please come join to take some time to relax away from your work and studies! The "Coffee & Tea Tasting Night!" will be Thursday November 18th from 6-7pm at the 1000 McIntyre Community Center MPR. Meet some Northwood Community members too! Coffee cake will also be provided for a nice treat!

New digital dome technology brings new perspectives to even the most familiar celestial bodies, constellations, and phenomena, from the Big Dipper to the northern lights.

The book we're reading this month is Ophie's Ghosts by Justina Ireland. We'll be reading the book in February but will push the book club meeting to March 5th since the events got sent out late this month. Do you plan to use Northwood Community Gardens this Summer? If YES, please join our Seed Library!

How does a Seed Library work?

If you bought packets of seed and you don't use them all, you can donate them to our seed library. Bring them to RA Rena at 1903 McIntyre. The more people join, the more variety we have. In early May you can come to the 1000 McIntyre Community Center and check what seeds are available. You can then borrow as many seeds as you need and grow your own food. At the end of the harvesting season, you are encouraged to collect some seeds from your garden and bring them back to the seed library.

The SEED LIBRARY  creates access to seeds to empower members of our community to grow their own food. If you want to contribute ,use the seed library and learn more, please email to RA Rena : renamova@umich.edu

Come and join RA Ben for some fun, live, Disney sing a-long from the comfort of your own home! Participants will need to request songs in advance of the event through a Google form that will be shared upon registration. All ages are welcome to join in. Come read with us for our April Kids Book Club! The book we're reading this month is Stand Up, Yumi Chung! by Jessica Kim. Even if your child doesn't finish reading before our meeting on April 30, have them come ready to talk about their favorite books and enjoy some pizza! If your child is under 8 or over 12 but would be able to understand and enjoy the book, they're welcome to join! The age range is just an estimate based on reading level. We will be back in person and are now allowed to serve food again in the Community Center, so I'm excited to see you all there!

Americanah is a 2013 novel by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, for which Adichie won the 2013 U.S. National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. Americanah tells the story of a young Nigerian woman, Ifemelu, who immigrates to the United States to attend university. The novel traces Ifemelu's life in both countries, threaded by her love story with high school classmate Obinze. It was Adichie's third novel, published on May 14, 2013 by Alfred A. Knopf. A television miniseries, starring and produced by Lupita Nyong'o, was in development for HBO Max, but then was later dropped.[2]
