Service Day 2019

The School of Public Health exists to help our neighbors near and far. Service Day puts that into practice with one mass day of volunteering on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Service Day connects the School of Public Health community - including students, alumni, faculty and staff - by promoting health and engaging the community. Groups and individuals will volunteer in their local communities while representing the School of Public Health. It is centered around a project that can help make a difference in your local community. Examples include volunteering at a food bank, painting a community center, and planting a community garden. Join us! Service Day provides students with an engaging and rewarding day, alums an opportunity to connect and build a Michigan community away from Ann Arbor, while faculty and staff support their local communities and connect outside of the office.

The Flint water crisis continues, with bottled water being the safest, trusted clean water option for Flint residents. Join us to distribute cases of bottled water to nearly 1,000 of Flint's most vulnerable, mobility-limited residents at housing complexes for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Gain an insider view of the water crisis and its current dynamics, from on-the-ground resident organizers and residents who face barriers to accessing clean water.

Carpools will be arranged. Meet in SPH I lobby at 8:30 am for carpools to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (502 Leith St, Flint, MI 48505). Food Gatherers rescues several tons of food daily that volunteers help us process, inspect and sort. Since we depend on food donations from the community, we aren’t always sure what we’ll be getting from one day to the next. We receive various, last minute items, and though we often improvise, we have adequate work areas and will provide all necessary training. Volunteers  generally help us sort food (such as produce), stock our pantry with canned goods, repackage bulk items, help us salvage/wash damaged products (such as a case of juice boxes with one that is leaking), and work with us to keep the warehouse and trucks clean and food-safe.

Volunteer activity is from 1:00 - 3:00 pm. Lunch will be served at Food Gatherers at 12:15 pm, followed by a brief volunteer training promptly at 1:00 pm. (Please note: 11:30 am - 4:00 pm time listed above allows for travel time to and from the site).

What to wear: Comfortable, casual attire -- No sleeveless shirts, non-slip, closed-toed shoes. It is recommended to bring a sweatshirt or jacket -- volunteers may be working in their Green Room (50 degrees) and the warehouse can be a bit chilly. Some jobs require a hat/hairnet. Food Gatherers will provide hairnets, but you may bring your own hat (baseball cap, knit hat, bandana) if you wish.

Lunch is provided.

Each volunteer will need to complete a volunteer form and bring it with them on Service Day. Any volunteer who has not volunteered with Food Gatherers within the past two years needs to complete a form. Form
