Service Day 2019 View Other Sessions

The School of Public Health exists to help our neighbors near and far. Service Day puts that into practice with one mass day of volunteering on Saturday, April 13, 2019. Service Day connects the School of Public Health community - including students, alumni, faculty and staff - by promoting health and engaging the community. Groups and individuals will volunteer in their local communities while representing the School of Public Health. It is centered around a project that can help make a difference in your local community. Examples include volunteering at a food bank, painting a community center, and planting a community garden. Join us! Service Day provides students with an engaging and rewarding day, alums an opportunity to connect and build a Michigan community away from Ann Arbor, while faculty and staff support their local communities and connect outside of the office.

The Flint water crisis continues, with bottled water being the safest, trusted clean water option for Flint residents. Join us to distribute cases of bottled water to nearly 1,000 of Flint's most vulnerable, mobility-limited residents at housing complexes for low-income seniors and people with disabilities. Gain an insider view of the water crisis and its current dynamics, from on-the-ground resident organizers and residents who face barriers to accessing clean water.

Carpools will be arranged. Meet in SPH I lobby at 8:30 am for carpools to Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church (502 Leith St, Flint, MI 48505). Convene in the water storage shed across the street for the welcome/introductions and learning about the water crisis response/recovery context before traveling to water distribution sites.

Our community partners for this impactful service experience are water crisis first responders Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and Salem Lutheran Church.

Volunteer activity is from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm (Please note: 8:30 am - 3:00 pm time listed above allows for travel time to and from the site)

Lunch is provided.
