Please note that all books are provided free of charge, but our stock is limited. Register in advance to secure your copy! If you aren't able to register but secure your own copy, reach out to Laura Herbert (lmhmich@umich.edu) to be added.

Meet at the Northwood Community Center MPR (1000 McIntyre)
Akshaya Varghese (akshaya@umich.edu)

Northwood graduate residents will attend the Ann Arbor School of Yoga’s $5 community yoga class as a group. This program is designed as a welcoming, beginner-friendly wellness outing that supports stress reduction, healthy routines, and community-building. Residents are encouraged to participate at their own comfort level—resting is always an option.

Plan (Start to Finish)
4:00 PM – Meet-Up at Northwood (10–15 minutes):
Residents meet with the Graduate Resident Advisor at a designated Northwood meeting spot. I’ll do a quick check-in, confirm transportation plans, and share a few expectations: come as you are, listen to your body, and respect others’ focus during class. I’ll also remind residents what to bring (water, comfortable clothing; mats are optional if the studio provides them/if residents have one).

Travel to Studio (15–25 minutes, depending on transit/carpool):
We’ll head to the Ann Arbor School of Yoga together. This travel time is intentionally part of the program—light conversation, introductions, and a friendly “we’re doing this together” vibe, without pressure to socialize intensely.

Arrive + Settle In (10–15 minutes):
We’ll check in, pay the $5 fee, store belongings, and get set up. I’ll help first-timers feel oriented (where to put shoes/bags, where to set up, studio etiquette). Residents can choose to spread out or sit near each other.

Community Yoga Class (typically ~60–75 minutes):
Residents participate in a guided class that may include breathing exercises, gentle-to-moderate movement, and a relaxation period. The emphasis is on stress relief, grounding, and leaving feeling more resourced than when they arrived.

Post-Class Cooldown + Optional Check-Out (10 minutes):
After class, we’ll regroup outside (or in the lobby) for a brief, optional reflection. I’ll offer simple prompts like: “One word for how you feel now?” or “Anything you want to do differently next time?” Sharing is optional—residents can also just enjoy quiet.

Return to Northwood (by 6:30 PM):
We’ll travel back together and close out the program with quick reminders about future wellness/community opportunities.

Northwood Community Yoga: Movement, Mindfulness, and Connection will be a beginner-friendly yoga event designed to help residents relax, move their bodies, and connect with one another in a supportive community setting. Residents will be invited to participate in a gentle yoga session focused on stretching, breathing, balance, and stress relief. The program will be accessible to all experience levels, including residents who have never practiced yoga before.

The event will begin with a brief welcome and introduction, allowing residents to settle in and meet others in the space. The yoga session will then guide participants through mindful movement and breathing exercises intended to support physical well-being and relaxation. After the yoga practice, residents will have time to cool down, reflect, and casually connect with one another.

Residents should bring a yoga mat or towel if they have one, though participation will remain flexible and accessible. This program is intended to help residents leave feeling calmer, more grounded, and more connected to the Northwood community.

Northwood Meditation Circle: Calm, Reflection, and Community will be a peaceful, beginner-friendly meditation event for residents who want to slow down, reduce stress, and connect with others in the Northwood community. The program will offer residents a chance to step away from academic, work, and personal responsibilities and spend time in quiet reflection.

The event will begin with a short welcome and an explanation of the purpose of the program. Residents will then be guided through simple breathing exercises and a short meditation practice. The meditation will be accessible to all participants, including those with no previous meditation experience. After the guided practice, residents will have the opportunity to reflect individually or participate in optional low-pressure conversation with neighbors.

The goal is for residents to experience a sense of calm, emotional grounding, and community support. This program will help residents learn a simple well-being practice they can use in their daily lives while also creating a welcoming space for connection within Northwood.

Meet @ Northwood Community Center
RAs Amber (ambnicol@umich.edu), Nia (niahall@umich.edu), & Taylor (lewit@umich.edu)

Join us for an opportunity to tour and volunteer at the U-M Botanical Gardens, Campus Farms!

The campus farm is a student-driven living learning lab that supports sustainable food systems. Northwood residents are welcome to join sessions in May, June, July, and August to learn more about the farm, volunteer by harvesting seasonal goodies, and explore other exciting opportunities for engagement.  Pizza lunch will be available at the farm!

Because the farm is not on the bus route, residents without transportation can meet RAs at the Community Center at 10:30AM for a vanpool. Families and children of residents are also invited to attend but must commute to the farm on their own.

We strongly recommend that participants wear long-sleeve shirts,  pants, and closed-toed shoes to volunteer.

U-M Campus Farms at the Matthei Botanical Gardens is located at 1800 N. Dixboro Road, Ann Arbor, MI, 48105.
