Islands of Rhythm, Oceans of Stories: Experience Indonesia

The Indonesian Cultural Festival (ICF) 2026 is an annual cultural celebration organized by the Indonesian Student Association at the University of Michigan (ISA-UM). The festival aims to introduce and celebrate the richness of Indonesian culture while fostering cross-cultural exchange within the University of Michigan community.

This year’s theme, “Islands of Rhythm, Oceans of Stories: Experience Indonesia,” highlights the diversity of Indonesia’s cultural heritage, traditions, and artistic expressions. Through a series of engaging programs, ICF invites participants to explore the stories, creativity, and vibrant spirit of Indonesia.

Experience Indonesia through film.

Our Movie Screening event will feature Gundala (2019), one of Indonesia’s most iconic modern superhero films directed by Joko Anwar. The film follows Sancaka, a young man who grows up in a harsh environment and eventually discovers his extraordinary powers, becoming Gundala, a hero who stands against injustice and corruption.

Inspired by the classic Indonesian comic series created by Harya “Hasmi” Suraminata, Gundala blends action, social themes, and Indonesian storytelling traditions. The film represents a new wave of Indonesian cinema and the emergence of a shared superhero universe.

Through this screening, audiences will have the opportunity to explore Indonesian pop culture, storytelling, and contemporary film production while enjoying an exciting cinematic experience.
