A professional portfolio has many components, each of which will continue to evolve over time and should be readily adapted to suit a variety of audiences.

During this workshop, you will:

  • Learn key similarities and differences between a CV and a biosketch,
  • Learn how to describe your experiences and achievements using language for maximum impact (and minimal cliche),
  • Learn how to structure your CV or resume to adapt to different audiences,
  • Engage in document review with peers.

Please bring a copy of your CV or biosketch to participate in a peer review portion of this workshop.

Now that you have your CV, how do you write a resume?

During this workshop you will:

  • Learn about the main purpose and uses of a resume,
  • Learn the basic outline of a good resume and its format
  • Learn to tailor your document to the purpose of its final use,
  • Engage in document review with peers.

Bring with you a draft of a resume (it doesn't have to be perfect!) and an example of a job for which you might be interested in applying (again, it doesn't have to the ideal job, just something that caught your eye!).

A formal research plan, teaching philosophy, and diversity statement are commonly required for faculty job applications. Other positions may require one or more of these too. It is important that you demonstrate your promise and communicate your vision for your future in these documents.

  • Learn the purpose and the suggested structure of each statement,
  • Learn how to convey and demonstrate your accomplishments and vision in each statement,
  • Learn how to convey your communication competency via these statements.
