Join TF Rawan in attendting a new series on the history of desserts by decade, starting with the 1920s! The 1920s began with the high of women getting the vote and ended with the low of a stock market collapse. In between, The Jazz Singer and Steamboat Willie premiered, John Scopes and Mae West went on trial, and the World Series was broadcast on the radio for the first time. And a “lost generation” enjoyed petting parties while taking a jorum of skee and hoping not to pull a Daniel Boone. Learn about some darb recipes from the 1920s with Lakehouse Bakery owner, Keegan Rodgers and hear about national and local history from historian/writer Patti Smith. 

Keegan C. Rodgers, owner of The Lakehouse Bakery in Chelsea, leads this lively talk on how to make macarons! The ingredients, instructions, and proper storage will all be covered in this class. Taste a macaron, too!

The Detroit Jazz Festival is a free jazz festival held every year during Labor Day Weekend in Detroit, Michigan. The event will take place on August 30th. Tansportaion will be provided for the event. We will leave from Ann Arbor at 4.00 PM and return around 9 p.m.

Dr. Miranda Brown, a cultural historian with primary interests in Chinese culinary and medical recipes, gives an overview of the invention and development of bubble tea: the most famous export of Taiwanese food.

Members of a Michigan Humanities Collaboratory research team presents a window into a little-known but fascinating South American community of Afrikaans speakers. Their work combines ethnographic, linguistic, and historical methods to explore the people and ideologies of this community displaced from South Africa to Patagonia more than 110 years ago.

Chinese New Year, known as the “Spring Festival”, is the most important festival celebrated by the Chinese at the turn of the traditional Chinese calendar, when families gather together and embrace the upcoming year. Brace yourself for an elegant ensemble of poetry highlighting the life, legacy, and activism of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event will address the contemporary perception of Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech and raise thought-provoking questions about how our society measures against King’s vision.

From performing for TEDx and the Detroit Pistons to Oxford and the Motown Museum, the award-winning poets of The Guild have assembled their talents to curate a poetry showcase that will be sure to inspire, challenge, and engage audiences of all backgrounds. The performance will feature Michigan-based poets including Justin Gordon, Candace Jackson, Mikhaella Norwood, Mariah Smith, Darius Simpson, Mercedes Pergande, Alex Kime, and actor Kate Mendeloff.

New year comes with new ideas, goals, and resolutions. Let's get together at 1000 McIntyre on 01/25/2020 (Saturday) at 4.00 p.m to discuss the resolutions and write them on a paper and frame them. You will be provided with frames, canvas, painting colors, stickers, and other decorative stuff to design your resolutions creatively and frame them later. Please feel free to bring your own stuff to be more creative if you wish to. This event will also give you a platform to find people with similar resolutions who can help you stay motivated throughout the year till you accomplish your goal.

Join TF Rawan in attending the 2020 Malaysian Cultural Night. Free for all, people of all ages are welcome to spend their evening with a musical that delves into Malaysian art, culture and racial dynamics. Guests are also invited for a free dinner with some good Malaysian company after the show. The night will follow the story of 4 Malaysian students who transferred to the University of Michigan, each with their unique background stories. The light hearted play will showcase unity among ethnically diverse people, and most importantly, the significance of true friendship. The characters will embody individuals that struggle with family expectations, finding their identities away from home, making friends all whilst adapting to a new culture in a new country. This play is highly relatable to students who are studying abroad, and it aims to realize the experience as well as to educate the non-Malaysian audience on our identity. MCN 2020 will also showcase a variety of traditional dances from different ethnic groups in Malaysia.

The Department of Dance’s annual concert, Latin Xpressions, explores the diversity of the Latin experience through new choreography. An eclectic array of guest artists will cross cultural divides and create works encompassing ballet, modern, flamenco, and experimental dance. Carlos Pons Guerra, born in Gran Canaria, Spain, and now the artistic director of the UK-based DeNada Dance Theatre, is gaining a world-wide reputation for blending dance vocabularies to create a distinct dance style that is accessible, humorous, and poignant. Joel Valentin-Martínez, a Mexican-American dancer and choreographer who was a longtime member of Garth Fagan Dance, is currently director of the dance program at Northwestern University. His piece will fuse contemporary and flamenco vocabulary inspired by Miles Davis’s “Spanish Key.” Rosie Herrera, a Cuban-American choreographer and artistic director of Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre in Miami, will create a theatrical and iconoclastic piece for our student performers. Under the direction of faculty member Jillian Hopper, BFA dance majors will create short interludes set to selections of popular and classical music from Latin America coordinated by faculty member Christian Matijas-Mecca.

The documentary "The Brain That Changes Itself" explores some groundbreaking findings as heralded in a book of the same title by psychiatrist and researcher Dr. Norman Doidge. This documentary tells amazing stroies of men and women whose brains have changes and adapted over time and reveals some mindblowing discoveries.

Join TF Rawan on February 15th in attending the largest Arab cultural showcase at the University of Michigan. This year's theme, farhatna, or "our joy" encompasses the Arab identity and showcases what it means to have Arab pride at the University of Michigan. Get ready for choreographed dabkeh performances, student talents, Arabic music, and, as usual, comedic skits highlighting what it means to be Arab. This will be a powerful and entertaining night for everyone, friends and family alike! Free tickets will be provided on a first-come first-serve basis.

Sonnets, Soliloquies, and Soul is a world premiere musical revue inspired by the works of William Shakespeare as reimagined through African American musical idioms such as soul, gospel, jazz, and funk. Tony Nominee Michael McElroy joins us as the director, arranger, and creator of this special event. McElroy has been a performer for many years, appearing on and off-Broadway, with the New York Philharmonic, and on assorted CDs, TV shows, and films. He is also the Founder/Music Director and Arranger for Broadway Inspirational Voices, a multi-racial gospel choir comprised of Broadway performers. McElroy is currently an Associate Arts Professor at Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.
