CGIS GCC Information Sessions: Spring 2026

GCCs offer a unique opportunity to take what students learn on campus at U-M and apply it abroad in a fun and exciting hands-on class taught by a U-M professor.

GCCs include two components:

  • An on-campus course during the winter semester
  • A 3-week, off-campus field experience that takes place during the following summer.

CGIS is offering 8 GCC programs for Spring 2026 across four continents! Check out the information sessions by program below.

What is it about?

In a Copenhagen-focused extension of WGS 220, students will be able to compare and contrast information about social, political, and medical system issues surrounding reproductive health in the United States with the same issues in Denmark. Denmark is an interesting country for comparison because their integration of midwifery and obstetrical care is by design (a low-risk pregnancy is co-managed by a midwife and a physician together, but with most direct care and prenatal and labor visits managed by a midwife) and because of the much more robust parental leave policies.

Students must take WGS 220 in Winter 2026 to do the abroad portion of this program.

CGIS Advisor Will Clancy / Professor Victor Fanucchi

Join Professor Victor Fanucchi and CGIS Advisor Will Clancy to learn more about the CGIS: Global Course Connections (GCC) in France - Paris on Film program. This GCC program offers the unique opportunity to pair your on-campus winter studies with an exciting hands-on 3-week global experience taught by Professor Fanucchi in the summer.

Paris lays claim to the title of the birthplace of cinema, and from the premiere of the Lumiere Brothers’ cinematograph in 1895 to the present day, a robust French film industry, joined by Hollywood and filmmakers worldwide, have pointed their cameras at Paris as a setting and subject as well. In the Paris-based extension of FTVM 203 "Paris on Film" we will visit the locations depicted in films we've studied and compare reality with fiction. We will explore the creative processes of cinematic storytelling and cinematography by looking at specific depictions of Paris.

What is it about?

Whether it is the result of Latin American slavery or colonization, a collective memory of endurance and resistance binds Black people from the African continent to Black diaspora. Black people from all corners of the globe have always explored, theorized, documented, visualized, and archived their people’s creativity and resilience. Global Blackness experiences indicate the larger community of Black people within each diasporic community. GCC Brazil concentrates on the experience of Afro-Brazilians and what the future could be for them given their historical realities.

The details:
