Graduate School Playbook: Your Game Plan for Success!

This event, in partnership with GSBES, SHPE Grad, and the National Society of Black Physicists (NSBP) Willie Hobbs Chapter will provide participants with an overview of the graduate school application process, strategies for success as BIPOC students, and tools to navigate challenges in predominantly white academic spaces. Through interactive activities, panel discussions, and personalized feedback, our goal is to empower students with the knowledge, resources, and community support they need to pursue graduate education.

Goals/Objectives:

  • Increase Awareness: Provide a comprehensive overview of the graduate school application process, including how to choose programs, prepare application materials, and explore financial aid and scholarship options.
  • Empowerment: Equip underrepresented students with strategies for successfully navigating the graduate school process, particularly in STEM fields.
  • Community Building: Foster a supportive network among BIPOC students to share experiences, resources, and guidance as they pursue graduate education.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the workshop, students will be able to:

  • Identify key components of a strong graduate school application, such as personal statements, recommendation letters, and GRE requirements (if applicable).
  • Understand how to research graduate programs, funding opportunities, and scholarships, with a focus on resources for underrepresented students.
  • Develop a personal action plan and timeline for their graduate school application process.
  • Gain insights into managing imposter syndrome and other challenges faced by BIPOC students in predominantly white STEM spaces.
