Empowerment Self-Defense 2024-25

U-M students, faculty and staff are invited to take control of their personal safety by learning physical and verbal strategies to counter violence through our empowerment self-defense workshops.
The workshops, led by Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP)-certified instructors, aim to teach participants situational awareness and prevention skills to leave them better equipped to deal with everything from harassment to potentially violent people to sexual assault. Participants will take part in verbal exercises, physical drills and discussion.

THIS COURSE WILL NOT USE PEPPER SPRAY AS AN APPPLICATION AND PARTICIPANTS SHOULD NOT BRING PEPPER SPRAY WITH THEM TO THE COURSE

This short and comprehensive course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills necessary for the safe and legal use of pepper spray as a self-defense tool in Michigan. 

Participants will gain an in-depth understanding of Michigan's pepper spray laws, including restrictions and permissible uses, ensuring compliance and responsible handling. 

The course also emphasizes the development of essential de-escalation techniques to prevent conflict and effective physical self-defense tactics to protect oneself in dangerous situations. 

Through practical exercises and expert guidance, students will emerge more confident and prepared to navigate real-world scenarios safely and legally.
