CJS: Nihonga Workshop with Julie Hayashi (Tuesday, March 5)

Explore the world of traditional Japanese painting with our upcoming workshop, delving into the exquisite technique known as nihonga. Witness the evolution of nihonga's style over time while discovering the enduring use of materials and techniques rooted in ancient Japanese painting traditions.

Immerse yourself in the artistic process as painters employ iwa-enogu pigments, crafted from crushed natural minerals. Marvel at the use of paints derived from natural sources like soil and shells, blended seamlessly with animal glue (nikawa). Participants in the workshop will have the unique opportunity to engage with the beauty and spiritual essence of Japanese painting materials, bringing this art form to life by painting leaves on authentic Japanese paper. Join us for a hands-on experience that captures the essence of this traditional and captivating artistic practice.

About the Artist

Julie Hayashi received her Ph.D. in conservation and restoration of Japanese paintings from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2018. Currently based in the UK with support from the Pola Art Foundation, she has travelled worldwide to create her works. She paints plants and abstractions using traditional Japanese painting techniques and materials under the themes of "things that appear by themselves" and "things that change." She goes to mountains and forests, sometimes spending day and night there to make drawings, and incorporates the wind, sound, and air into her works.
