During this session, we will hear from two returned volunteers who are currently working in the medical field. We will discuss how the Peace Corps prepared them for medical school and, more generally, a career in medicine.
Meet our panelists:
Elizabeth Scruggs is the chief resident for Internal Medicine-Pediatrics at the University of Michigan, and previously completed her medical degree at the University of Michigan in 2018. She is originally from Tucson, AZ, where she received her undergraduate degree in Women's Studies at the University of Arizona. She spent several years working for the Center for Creative Photography in fine print restoration before becoming a Peace Corps Volunteer. She served as a youth development volunteer in Northern Peru from 2008-2010, and was a PCVC in Lima, Peru from 2010-2011. Elizabeth is interested in Infectious Diseases and plans to work in the areas of global health, refugee/migrant care, and public health in her future career.
Yoonhee Ryder is a medical student at the University of Michigan Medical School, currently receiving a Masters of Science in Clinical Research at Michigan. She received her dual undergraduate degree in biology and anthropology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and a Middle Eastern Studies minor at the American University in Dubai. After graduation, Yoonhee served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Togo, West Africa for 2.5 years as a community health extension agent before starting medical school in 2018. Yoonhee aspires to continue to work in global health and global surgery in her future career.
