Navigating AI Together: AI & Environmental Resources

How does Artificial Intelligence (AI) affect environmental resources (water, energy, land)? Does it make it better or worse or is the answer both? Some people cite environmental impact as a reason they do not use AI tools while others feel the concerns are exaggerated. Is the outcome worth the impact? Some folks may not have considered these questions at all but are interested in exploring them.

In recognition of Climate Week, let’s navigate these questions together. The intention of this first AI community conversation is to listen to each other’s perspectives, ask questions and share information sources that we have found helpful.

* This community conversation topic is organized in recognition of UM Climate Week (September 26-October 3).

Navigating AI Together: An OCC Community Conversations

Series Description

Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a core goal for UMSI, but what does that actually mean for our everyday work and daily lives? There are strong opinions-- some folks are early adapters, some staunchly opposed and many others simply unsure where they stand. While a lot of public discussion focuses on how AI affects classrooms, technology has the potential to change how all of us—staff, faculty, and students alike—get tasks done and find information.

This new community conversation series is an open, friendly space to talk through big questions around AI without the tech jargon. We aren't here to lecture or push a specific viewpoint. Instead, each hour-long session is a place to swap ideas, listen to different perspectives, learn from each other and figure out what AI means for you.

Each meeting focuses on one practical topic, like AI's environmental footprint, its effect on social good, or the pros and cons of using AI tools at work. You'll walk away with helpful resources, and access to a dedicated Slack channel to keep the conversation going.

No prior knowledge on AI is required for participants to participate meaningfully.
