Join us as we launch Latine Heritage Month with a special Circle of Solidarity centered on remembrance, celebration, and the people who have shaped our lives.
Inspired by the Latin American tradition of Día de los Muertos, we’ll explore the ways different cultures and communities honor loved ones who have passed away. Together, we’ll learn about the tradition of creating an ofrenda (altar) and reflect on the memories, stories, traditions, and legacies we carry forward.
This gathering is an opportunity to celebrate the lives and lasting impact of those who came before us, while also learning about and sharing the many ways our communities remember and honor loved ones. Participants are welcome to bring a photo, small memento, story, or simply a memory to share—sharing is always optional.
Whether you celebrate Día de los Muertos, have another cultural tradition for honoring loved ones, or are simply curious to learn, you are welcome in this Circle. Come as you are, connect with others, and help us create a space that celebrates the people, stories, and traditions that make our communities who we are.
What are Circles of Solidarity?
UMSI Circles of Solidarity are co-created spaces, held regularly, where UMSI faculty, students and staff can bring their whole selves to come together and engage in meaningful conversation and activities. Themes vary and may emerge in response to local, global, or national events.
As with all UMSI Circles of Solidarity, this is not a therapy group, but a space to build community, practice mutual care, and engage in meaningful conversation. We recognize that conversations about loss and remembrance can bring up many different emotions. For any reason, you can choose to take a break or to leave the circle at any time. You are always welcome to participate in whatever way feels comfortable for you including artistic mediums, written thoughts, gestures, and verbal contributions. Support resources are also shared as part of every circle.
Our intent is for this circle to help foster a culture of empathy and solidarity within our UMSI community. Come celebrate, remember, share, and connect with us as we begin Hispanic Heritage Month together.
