Income Taxes: What Graduate Students Need to Know

If you’ll work on campus, start an internship, or have a part-time job, you’ll likely fill out withholding forms when you’re hired. These forms tell your employer how much federal/state income tax to take out of each paycheck. Withholding forms are important:

  • Too little withheld means you could owe money at tax time (and nobody wants a “welcome to adulthood” bill).

  • Too much withheld means you might get a refund, but it also means you lent the government money all year.

  • Learning the basics now helps you choose sensible withholding settings and adjust early—before it becomes a problem.

This virtual session will break down income taxes from withholding through basic filing information so that you can ensure accurate withholding now before end of the year surprises.
