What does it mean to be an anti-racist peer tutor? In this participant-driven workshop, we will unpack the ways that bias plays out as we respond to other people’s writing. How and why do people judge others based on how they write and speak? Whose languages, whose dialects, and whose voices command respect—or not—and in what contexts? Dealing with bias is not an easy task, so we’ll approach our work with patience and humor!

What do your tutees' internal dialogues indicate about their chances for success in a class? Does it matter? Can you help change it? Yes, it does matter, and yes, you can change it! Come explore how to assess whether your tutees tend to react to life events more as a victim or a creator. Learn to recognize their self-talk or “stinkin’ thinkin’” that leaves them in the victim seat. Then learn how to help them create greater success by changing their vocabulary!
