OGPS Faculty Corner - Fall 2026

This is a monthly in-person event designed to provide insights, advice, and knowledge to you as an emerging academic. Each event features a faculty member discussing topics pertinent to starting an academic career focusing on research. You will get to hear from faculty about their career trajectories and how they navigated their transition from trainee to faculty member. You will also have an opportunity to network with the faculty member as well as other trainees.

Aims and Objectives:

  1. To provide a platform where trainees can learn from faculty experiences and knowledge.
  2. To address and discuss pertinent issues and topics relevant to the biomedical/medical field and life sciences.
  3. To foster networking and community-building opportunities among trainees and faculty.
  4. To promote a culture of continuous learning and improvement, equipping trainees with the necessary skills and information for the faculty profession needed to transition into academia.

Anatomy of a Faculty Search

Prof. Pierre Coulombe

This month's session features Prof. Pierre Coulombe, who serves as the G. Carl Huber Professor and Chair of the Department of Cell & Developmental Biology. He is jointly appointed in the Department of Dermatology and is a member of the Rogel Cancer Center, and the Center for Plasticity and Organ Design. 

Dr. Coulombe will share his knowledge of tenure-track faculty searches and you'll hear first-hand insights about preparing application materials, navigating the search process, and transitioning into a faculty role.

Driven by Discovery: Careers on the Research Track

This month's panel offers insight into careers on the research track, which includes research investigators, research scientists, and research faculty. Dr. Jessica Anand, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacology, and Dr. Orsolya Lautner-Csorba, Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, will share their perspectives and career trajectories.

Strategies for Successful Interviews and Negotiations

For this month's session, we will be joined by Dr. Anne Draelos. Dr. Draelos is an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan. She is also a member of the Michigan Neuroscience Institute. 


Dr. Draelos will share her perspective as a tenure-track faculty member who recently was successful in her R1 job search. In this interactive Q&A, you will hear her first-hand perspective on what search committees value, how to approach interviews, and how to discuss job offers.

Preparing & Delivering an Effective Chalk Talk

In this month's session, we will be joined by Dr. Evan Snitkin. Dr. Snitkin is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and Internal Medicine. 


Dr. Snitkin will share his knowledge of preparing and delivering an effective chalk talk, a defining part of many faculty interviews. In this interactive Q&A, you will hear faculty insights on what committees expect, how to organize your talk, and strategies for handling challenging questions.
