Unlocking the Hidden Curriculum Series

In this session, we will work together towards better understanding how to effectively align your expectations with those of your advisor. By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

• Identify key areas where mentor-mentee expectations often differ in research environments
• Develop strategies for goal setting, effective communication, and time management
• Understand what the hidden curriculum is and how to navigate it during your PhD journey
• Develop strategies to navigate and renegotiate expectations as your research evolves

In this workshop, participants will engage with the aspects of a mentoring plan and build one out. In this session, participants will:

• Create content for various mentoring plan areas
• Discover how to effectively advocate for plans that are beneficial to their education and future careers
• Develop or revise a mentoring plan

In this workshop, participants will gain tools for how to navigate difficult conversations in the lab environment. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

• Identify and minimize conflict avoidance behavior
• Learn how to approach difficult conversations
• Learn the key components of asking for and accepting feedback
• Practice your skills in navigating a difficult conversation

This workshop will explore foundations of culturally competent communication. By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

• Navigate differences in values
• Strengthen their ability to communicate with lab mates from various backgrounds
• Understand communication style differences
• Foster inclusive dialogue in the lab
