A&A Shop Proficiency Training

In order to access the Art & Architecture Shop, users must complete BOTH Orientation AND Woodshop Basics Proficiency Training. The Woodshop Basics Proficiency Training session covers the five most commonly used machines: miter saw, band saw, drill press, sanders, and scroll saw. 


Access: The Shop is available to students, staff, and faculty from the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning for work on class projects and research only. Potential users from other academic disciplines must be receiving credit for a class taught by a faculty member from the Art or Architecture schools.

Proficiency Training: Woodshop Basics

This session covers the five most commonly used machines in the Shop: the miter saw, band saw, drill press, sanders, and scroll saw. For each one, we will discuss best uses, clearances, material restrictions, basic set up and operation, risks, location of accessories, and clean up considerations. You will get the chance to use each machine, giving you time to practice and get comfortable and confident with the equipment.

Observe the Safety Dress rules. If you are improperly attired, you cannot attend the session. PPE like safety glasses and hearing protection are provided, or you may bring your own.

  • Wear sturdy closed-toe shoes.
  • No loose clothing, accessories, or jewelry that may be caught in moving equipment.
  • Wear short sleeves, or roll long sleeves above the elbows. 
  • Tie back long hair. 

Please bring your phone (make sure you are logged into your UM account) and MCard (or at least your ID number) when you attend training. Be prepared to spend a minute or two filling out forms.
