Fall 2023 DEI Symposium: Beyond Awareness - Structural Change for Equity

Overview of DEI 2.0: Understanding how Michigan Medicine’s DEI Strategic Plan aligns with U-M's overall DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan. The session will also provide an overview of the data used to inform Michigan Medicine’s DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan.

Four Executive Mini Presentations (15-20 minutes each) will provide insights into executive level DEI initiatives, including:

• Culturally Appropriate Patient Care: Heath Equity Consult Service (Okeoma Mmeje, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Assistant Professor, Health Behavior and Health Education) 
• Data to Drive Action: Use of REal, SOGI, and SODH data

This break will also feature a mini fair and a networking session, presenting an excellent opportunity for everyone to make meaningful connections, share experiences, and discuss the morning's sessions. 1:25 PM - 1:45 PM (20 mins)

Join us for a special session hosted by the Student Diversity Council, which will highlight various diversity activities within our Medical School. Topics may include culturally appropriate care or community collaborations for solutions. This is a chance to learn about the groundbreaking work being done by our students in advancing diversity and inclusion within the health field.

1:45 PM - 2:15 PM (30 mins)

Next, we will dive into our "Systemic & Shared Accountability" session, where we will reintroduce the concept of Resource Groups and DEI lead structures. The goal of this session is to ensure that everyone understands their role in our collective journey towards greater diversity, equity, and inclusion at Michigan Medicine.

2:15 PM - 2:45 PM (30 mins)

The following session will guide attendees through our Health Equity Roadmap. This roadmap forms a crucial part of our strategy, showing how we plan to ensure health equity within Michigan Medicine and the communities we serve. It is our collective path towards a more equitable healthcare system.

2:45 PM - 2:55 PM (10 mins)

We will conclude the Fall 2023 DEI Symposium with a closing session. This will be a time to reflect on the insights gained throughout the day, and to look forward to how we will apply what we've learned to our work and daily interactions. We will also share information about upcoming DEI events and initiatives.
