Sexpertise 2018

Sexpertise is a three-day conference from February 6 to 8, 2018. In 2018 we are celebrating our tenth year! Sexpertise engages students, faculty, and community practitioners in discussion and learning about sexuality and relationships. All events are free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged but not required, and you are invited to attend one, a few, or all sessions!

Interested in a career in sexual health research or wondering how we know all that we do about sexuality? This session will explore some sexual health research methods, including some of the challenges and limitations that sexual health researchers face. Researcher Harley Dutcher, MS will help you explore the answers to some of your questions! Some of her research interests include young people’s perceptions of their health and well-being in the context of social messages about body image, gender, and sex.

Did your sex education leave you ill-equipped to navigate friends with benefits, dating apps and one-night stands? In just 90 minutes, Stephanie Mayweather will help participants build skills to enhance safety and well-being for those who are facing a hookup-heavy dating culture.

This session will highlight the experiences of people of color in the sexual health field. Through a panel of practitioners and students, participants will learn about how sex and sexuality are expressed in people from diverse racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

The majority of sexual health education is focused on the experiences of cisgender people. This session, presented by Brendon Holloway, MSW, aims to highlight the sexual health experiences of transgender people. Topics covered will include barriers to accessing care, resources for transgender individuals, and ways to advocate for proper access to healthcare for transgender individuals.

Sexual health includes the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences. Sexperteam will guide you through an interactive workshop that will help you learn about safer sex items and items to increase pleasure! Participants will be able to see, touch, and feel a variety of sexual health products!

Sexual experiences are often much more diverse, expansive, and nuanced than how they appear in the media. In this session, Naomi Rawitz, LLMSW will focus on de-stigmatizing sexual difficulties and exploring strategies that can help expand sexual wellness and self-compassion when experiencing them.
