CGIS Briefs: Winter 2022

Designed to be 20-30 minutes in length, the CGIS Brief was created to give CGIS staff and prospective study abroad students an opportunity to have a conversation on various topics as a way to encourage students to start thinking more about their time abroad prior to departure. Topics vary from session to session. View our past briefs on lsa.umich.edu/cgis.

We encourage everyone to ask questions throughout the conversation or share out any insight of their own. Each event is co-facilitated by the CGIS Brief Team (Ashton, Callie and Stephen) every 3rd Thursday of the month at 3:00pm EST on Zoom!

Event Accommodations:

Do you need any accommodations that we should know about (disability, dietary needs, etc.)? We encourage you to share this information with us as early as possible, so we can put in place any reasonable accommodations. Please contact the CGIS Accommodations email (CGISaccommodations@umich.edu) to submit an accommodations request.

How do you translate, “they,” into French? For a group of men, “Ills,” and for a group of women, “Elles.” How do you refer to a group of people with a variety of genders in French? It’s still, “Ills.” But what about singular they? In French and many other gendered languages there may not be official pronouns for those who don’t identify within the male/female binary. This brief explores gendered languages and provides tips on how to navigate language in an inclusive way.

We all come back from study abroad with stories to share, and our stories can provide new and unknown information to our friends and family back home. However, how do we make sure we aren’t perpetuating negative stereotypes about a culture or telling someone’s story without their permission? This session will provide tips on ethical photography and writing and how to examine your bias in storytelling.

When we think of studying abroad, what comes to mind? Cultural exchange? Global citizen? Abolishing stereotypes? Those are all positive attributes, but we are here to teach you about the dark side of studying abroad. Learn about the colonial and imperialist roots of study abroad and how those themes persist in 2022. After viewing this brief, attendees may consider how to decolonize their own travel experiences.
