The goal of this event is to introduce residents to learning about sustainability and archiving. Through visiting the video game archive, residents will develop a sense of appreciation to game history and learn about how games and game consoles developed over time as well. As per the Responsible Stewardship tenet of MRADS, residents will learn about digital sustainability.

Meet at The Blue Market at 8:40pm to walk over to the Detroit Observatory (1398 E. Ann Street ) together!
“Visitors will have opportunities to observe the sky using Observatory telescopes led by trained astronomers. Inside the dome, the 1857 Fitz telescope provides wonderful views of the moon, planets, and stars! Observation sessions are weather dependent.” There will also be a walking tour of the center. This is a low stakes and interactive social opportunity for residents.

This Halloween-themed, hands-on program combines STEM, creativity, and stress relief in a fun, low-pressure environment. Residents will make and customize their own slime while experimenting with different ingredients, colors, and textures, giving them an opportunity to practice problem-solving and learn through trial and error. The event will also give residents a chance to take a break from academics, socialize with others, and enjoy a relaxing creative activity.

As residents enter the Jo Living Room, they will be welcomed into a relaxed atmosphere with background music playing. They can choose a seat at any of the open work tables. Residents will be instructed to head to the Supply Station first to grab a base pennant and their initial crafting materials before settling into a table. Once everyone is seated with their supplies, RA Prathisha will briefly introduce the event and its purpose. RA Prathisha will share a completed example pennant to give residents a visual idea of how to combine STEM symbols (e.g., gears, beakers, code brackets) with personal identity markers (e.g., cultural flags, favorite colors, community values).To wrap up the event, residents will be invited to do a quick "gallery walk" around the room or hold up their pennants to see what their peers created. They will take their finished decor back to their rooms to hang up.

This event will have a number of gaming stations set up in the Jo Living Room, including Uno, Apples to Apples, Codenames, and giant Jenga. Residents will be free to join whichever game interests them, and are encouraged to use this as a chance to meet new people. To facilitate movement, RA Sinna will join any games that are low on participants, switching as the event goes on to encourage players to move around.

We will run through a typical round of general trivia from start to finish, with five rounds, and if time permits, do more games with varying trivia. The teams will be set up randomly to give residents a chance to get to know each other.

At the start of the paint night, residents can grab refreshments to start the night of relaxation. They will then take a seat by their easels that are set up with their canvases, paints, and paintbrushes. I will play this videoLinks to an external site. where an instructor tells them how to paint a beach scene. After the beach is complete, I will encourage residents to paint a scene on the beach that has representations of their identities. Residents will then share their paintings with the people around them and as a group as a whole, explaining what each part of the scene represents of their identity if they are comfortable. This will lead into discussions of identity that will hopefully allow residents to think more on what represents them and what parts of their identity are most important.

During the event, residents will be able to reflect on their identities and embellish photo memories with customized frames. It is a time for residents to connect and relax after another Monday.

This program will provide residents with the opportunity to have free professional headshots taken in a welcoming and accessible environment (their own dorm!). During the event, residents will be able to drop in and have several photos taken against a simple, professional backdrop. Students will be encouraged to use their new headshots for LinkedIn, Handshake, internship and job applications, research opportunities, academic profiles, and other professional or academic purposes. In addition to taking headshots, the program will promote conversations about professional identity and preparing for future academic and career opportunities. Residents can interact with one another while waiting for their photos, creating a casual community-building environment alongside the professional development component. After the event, photos will be distributed digitally to participants.
