Join us for a talk with Cecelia Rose LaPointe to on the topic of Ojibway-Anishnaabe Two-Spirit Identity. In her own words: "As someone who identifies as Two-Spirit I firmly believe that I can only speak from my experience from my own culture and tribal affiliation. This presentation highlights the following: Ojibway-Anishinaabe Two-Spirit identity today, decolonization, healing from generational trauma and health, resources for Two-Spirits, creating safe spaces, and awareness in the majority culture."

Cecelia Rose LaPointe is Ojibway/Métis who is Mashkiziibi (Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe or LaPointe Band of Ojibwe) and Kchiwiikwedong (Keweenaw Bay Indian Community - Michigan). She is a poet and writer, weaving together Anishinaabe heritage and identity, decolonization, environmental justice, First Nations/Native American/Métis identity, marginalized identities, matriarchy, oppression, racial justice, sobriety, social justice, and Two-Spirit identity.

Cecelia was born into a female body but identifies first and foremost as Two-Spirit (Ogichidaakwe - which translates to "warrior woman" in the Ojibway language). Using majority culture terms she also identifies as androgynous, and gender non-conforming. This identity exists outside of colonized lines and socially constructed gender roles. Cecelia doesn't mind using gender pronouns of she/her/her but also approves of they/them/their.

Dr. Lopez, La Casa, and SACNAS

This summer La Casa is hosting their first ever Summer Book Club and they have invited SACNISTAs to participate! We will be reading Separated: Family and Community in the Aftermath of an Immigration Raid (~170 pages) by Dr. William Lopez, a Clinical Assistant Professor at the UofM School of Public Health.

"This is a book about our Washtenaw County community and how we responded to a series of immigration enforcement actions that happened in November of 2013. Even though the book characterizes a home raid in the midwest, I expect it will remind you of much of your experiences, perhaps in California, Chicago, Arizona, Texas (like me), or elsewhere in the Midwest. It's heavy material, and I look forward to reading and processing together. I would also like your help in thinking about how to bring the lessons of the book to other students through art, discussion, and social media. We'll discuss that when we meet as well." - Dr. Lopez

FREE COPIES OF THE BOOK WILL BE MADE AVAILABLE TO ALL SACNISTAs THAT WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE! YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO ATTEND ALL SESSIONS. PLEASE ATTEND THE SESSIONS THAT WORK FOR YOU.

Discussions (Please note they will be held from 5-6 PM EST):

July 28th: Chapter 1; The Raid: Before; Chapter 2; The Raid;

August 4th: Chapter 3; Chapter 4; The Raid: The Hours and Days After;

August 18th: Chapter 5; Conclusion; Epilogue. Blog Post: The Feeling When Someone Steals Your Book Title

The Lot Lounge at the Kerrytown Concert House

Join SACNAS on a Jazz Show at Dowtown. The Young Lions Collective at Kerrytown Concert House represents the best and brightest of Michigan’s next generation of jazz musicians. In this performance, the YLC will perform selections written diverse female jazz artists from across the years. In the case of inclement weather, the show will go on!

We'll move the artists and audiences inside the house, and pivot to a hybrid livestreamed and in-person audience format. All decisions regarding inclement weather plans will be made no later than 2 hours prior to the performance, which will be shared via email and on our social media pages.

Audience members who wish to attend the event inside the House will be required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination when checking in to the performance or proof of a negative COVID-19 test performed within the previous 72 hours prior to entry, as well as wear a mask while in attendance.

Should the event be moved indoors, ticket-holders will also been given the opportunity to view the concert from home via private livestream link which will be emailed to them at the email address on their ticket order between 30 minutes and 1 hour prior to show time.

Corazón is a love story. It is about the constant hunger for love. It is about feeding that hunger with another person and finding that sometimes it isn’t enough. Salgado creates a world in which the heart can live anywhere; her fat brown body, her parents home country, a lover, a toothbrush, a mango, or a song. It is a celebration of heartache, of how it can ruin us, but most importantly how we always survive it and return to ourselves whole. (86 pages)

Attendees will receive a free copy of the book.

We will be meeting Tue, February 22nd at 7pm to discuss the entire book. Please only register if you are able to attend the discussion. Priority will be given to those that have attended previous book clubs.

Tiko, a tiny island in the Pacific Ocean, faces a tidal wave of D-E-V-E-L-O-P-M-E-N-T, which threatens to demolish ancestral ways and the human spirit. From Sione, who prefers to play cards with his secretary during work hours, to Ole Pasifikiwei, who masters the twists and turns of international funding games, all of the characters in these pages are seasoned surfers, capable of riding the biggest wave to shore. These are not stories of fatal impact so much as upbeat tales of indigenous responses to cultural and economic imperialism. Epeli Hauofa uses devices derived from oral storytelling to create a South Pacific voice that is lucid, hilarious, and compassionate in a work that has long been regarded as a milestone in Pacific literature.

Epeli Hauʻofa (7 December 1939 – 11 January 2009) was a Tongan and Fijian writer and anthropologist born of Tongan missionary parents in the Territory of Papua. He lived in Fiji and taught at the University of the South Pacific (USP). He was the founder of the Oceania Centre for Arts at the USP.

This event is co-hosted by the Oceanic Student Association (OSA) and the Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS).

Join us on August 26th for a potluck in collaboration with GEO and SHPE! Food will be provided, though we strongly encourage anyone to bring snacks and party games as well!

As you may know, our graduate student union GEO currently only officially bargains for a GSI/GSSA contract, since GSRAs were legally categorized as ‘not employees’ in 1981. This year, Michigan law recognized the right for Graduate Student Research Assistants (GSRAs) to form a union! Members of the Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) have been working hard on a campaign to unionize GSRAs.

GEO has put together a short survey covering different aspects of life as a graduate researcher such as funding, work expectations, international student experiences, and changing advisors. Even if you are not an active GSRA, please help the cause by filling out this Graduate Researcher Survey: https://bit.ly/GSRAsurvey
