A Space to Think Workshop

OVERVIEW

This workshop offers a space for departmental faculty and graduate students to focus on their writing goals in a quiet, group setting. The workshop fills several departmental needs.

First, members of the department have expressed concerns about the lack of a cohesive community due to COVID-19 pandemic protocols. Working quietly in a setting with colleagues who are also focused on achieving their research goals helps to alleviate ongoing feelings of isolation. Second, many graduate students don’t know how faculty produce their work or how much time and commitment it takes. Working alongside faculty will help graduate students see how faculty divide their work into manageable pieces and set aside time to work on each component. Third, a designated space, free from the distractions of home or teaching, will assure faculty and graduate students that once a month there will be a place to make significant progress on their research.

LOGISTICS
The workshop will take place from 10am-3pm in LSA 4154. Lunch will be provided. Participants must register in advance to ensure that we order enough food. Spots will be first come first serve for each session.

Participants should arrive prepared to work on an assignment that can be tackled in the time allotted. Participants may arrive at any time during the workshop timeslot and depart at any time. This workshop is not a space to discuss working papers or to receive feedback on papers. It is a quiet space for sustained writing and/or data analysis.

There will be an online option for graduate students and faculty whose research takes them away from Ann Arbor. It is a way for them to reconnect with members of the department.
