Honors Reads

Certainly you are reading for your classes, but how often do you have time to read for pleasure and relaxation without worrying about grades or deadlines? Want to be able to engage in conversation about current literature, outside the academic? Join other Honors community members who love to read for pleasure. Honors students at all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Reads will (generally) meet independently for a 1 hour discussion of the book on a pre-determined date from 5:00 - 6:00, 1330 Mason Hall  Please do not sign up if you do not plan to attend the book discussion. A limited number of copies of the selected book will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Registered students may stop by the Honors office (1330 Mason Hall) to pick up a copy if one is still available. Honors subsidizes the cost of the book so the book will cost only $5.

If you joined Honors in 2017 or later, you will have the opportunity to earn one engagement point towards the Sophomore Honors Award if you attend and participate in at least 3 Honors Reads meetings before the end of you sophomore year.

This Honors Reads* is unique: we'll be hearing from author Derek Thompson of Hit Makers: How to Succeed in an Age of Distraction at two separate Honors events on 2.24.20: a Lunch with Honors (12-12:50p) and a Stowe Lecture (4-5:30p). You can find more of his journalistic work published by The Atlantic. Here are the details:

1. Pick up the book in the Honors Office. In 2020, we will move to a book buy-in of $5, in keeping with our Honors community ticketing buy-in. You can stop by the office, M 10a-4:30p or T-F 8:30a-4:30p, with cash only please. Please do not sign up for a book if you do not plan to attend one of the discussions listed next.

2. Attend one of Derek Thompson's lectures (we will try to sit together).

Feb. 24th Lunch with Honors conversation Derek 12-12:50p, 1330 Mason Hall OR
Feb. 24th Public Lecture 4-5:30p, Rackham Amphitheater

3. You will have the option of creating a question for the author pre-event (reminder email will be sent prior to the event)

4. Your Honors Reads participation will be in the form of a written 200-300 word reflection post-event (you will be sent a reminder email).

This event is unique because, generally, Honors Reads meets independently for an hour discussion of the chosen book. Certainly you are reading for your classes, but how often do you have time to read for pleasure and relaxation without worrying about grades or deadlines? Participants are able to engage in conversation about current literature, outside the academic, sharing thoughts and opinions. Join other Honors community members who love to read for pleasure. Honors students at all levels are welcome and encouraged to attend.

*For Sophomore Honors Award Engagement Points: If you joined Honors in 2017 or later, you will have the opportunity to earn one engagement point towards the Sophomore Honors Award if you attend and participate in at least 3 Honors Reads meetings before the end of you sophomore year.
