"911, What is your prejudice?": Racial bias and call-driven policing

A call to 911 from a Philadelphia Starbucks’ employee about two black men not making a purchase resulted in their arrest. A call from a Yale University graduate student on a black classmate who fell asleep in a common room led to unnecessary police contact. A call from a tenant in New York City on a former Obama aide moving into his own apartment resulted in a police dispatch. Incidents like these raise concerns about call-driven policing. Please join experts Washtenaw County Sheriff Jerry Clayton; Professor of Law Barry Friedman, New York University; and Jessica Gillooly, PhD candidate of the Ford School, in a panel moderated by Ford School faculty David Thacher for a panel examining racial bias in emergency calls.

Come join RA Taylor celebrate Korean Cinema at the Michigan Theater. They will be offering a free screening of the movie I Can Speak

A feisty retiree, infamous for hounding the local district office with innumerable complaints, clashes with a scrupulous young public servant. But when she discovers he's fluent in English, she suddenly tamps down and asks him to teach her. He reluctantly agrees and an unlikely bond develops, until her harrowing secrets make a very public return to the surface. Based on true events, what starts as a lighthearted Harold and Maude-style story, reveals a dark side of Korean history in this deeply moving and transformative journey.

"Hae-won is a young country girl who returns to her mother's humble home following a stint in the city. She was studying to become a teacher and supporting herself by working part time at a convenience store but when she failed her exam and decided she'd had enough of city life she decided to return to her farming roots. Back home, where she lives alone after her mother suddenly vanished before her own departure (until she is given the pet dog Ogu), she cooks local dishes with local ingredients and reconnects with here two childhood friends, Jae-ha (Ryu Jun-yeol) and Eun-sook (Jin Ki-joo)." - Pierce Conran, Screen Anarchy

University of Michigan Museum of Art
* Will meet at 2150 Cram Place Community Center

Abstraction, Color, and Politics in the Early 1970s explores large-scale works of art by Helen Frankenthaler, Louise Nevelson, Sam Gilliam, and Al Loving, within the context of highly-charged debates of the early 1970s about aesthetics, politics, race, and feminism. This exhibition explores the gendered and racialized terms upon which great art was defined and assessed, and the strategy of artists to question the identity and aesthetics of the artist making the art. UMMA docents will help visitors look through the lens of the four artists’ works to explore the aesthetic choices inherent in abstraction as well as the acts of staining, pouring, draping, —or even taking apart the wall itself—within this charged political context.

Detroit Zoo

*We will provide free ride and admission tickets. Please register in session before Nov 11(maximum attendees 31)

*Will meet at 2150 Cram Place Community Center at 0850 am.

*This event is mainly targeted to Northwood single graduate students. If you want to bring a friend, your friend should be a Northwood resident too.

*This is an adult-only event, as we are unable to transport children.

Embrace the Detroit Community and meet lovely animals in the end of the fall at the Detroit Zoo. What's more exciting is that the Detroit Zoo welcomed new baby wolverines from Sweden!! Go Blue!

Even though the temperature is trending down, you have a chance to see the animals that are more adapted to colder temperatures. The polar bears, arctic foxes, snow monkeys, tigers, wolverines, red pandas, Asian wild horses, elks, and bison were more visible than they have been on warmer visits. Even the animals that are not found in warmer climates were up and moving around and not hiding from the heat in the shade.

Have a great time with your friends as well as your Northwood neighbours!

Meet at NW V second Bus Stop to take Blue Bus to Power Center
Spend a fun night out with friends and neighbors at the power center watching Twelfth Night! We'll meet in Northwood V at the stop by parking lot 54. Each resident of Northwood can bring one guest. You must register to attend this event.

Shakespeare’s timeless romantic comedy, Twelfth Night follows separated twins Sebastian and Viola. Finding herself shipwrecked off Illyria and believing her brother dead, Viola disguises herself as a man and enters the service of Duke Orsino. The Duke believes himself in love with Olivia, but Olivia is swiftly falling for the disguised Viola. In the meantime, Viola is developing feelings for the Duke. When Sebastian (who is not dead) arrives in Illyria, confusion reigns supreme. Unrequited love and mistaken identities abound as the foursome journey towards a joyous discovery.
