Munger Fellows Events

Here at Munger Graduate Residences, we recognize it is important for graduate and professional students to learn and grow outside of their academic disciplines.  Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to take part in events focused on building community and developing transdisciplinary skills essential for success in 21st-century careers.

#MungerReads pick of the Month: The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life by Mark Manson. Both a New York Times Bestseller and entry on top MBA reading lists, this book offers insights on the power of negative thinking. One reviewer described it thus, "This book offers the core (non-religious) takeaways from Buddhism, so you aren’t diluted into thinking you can turn life’s lemons into lemonade. It’ll show you how to stomach the lemons better, cause we all know there is plenty of sh*t that is messed up in this world, and there’s only so much you can care about."  We'll be providing copies of the book, welcoming anyone who has already read it, or who wants to join the conversation.

Munger Reads pick of November is 'The Poisoned City: Flint's Water and the American Urban Tragedy' by Anna Clark.  Clark, a journalist in Detroit, chronicles the Flint water crisis, activism, and efforts for accountability.  Publishers Weekly described this non-fiction book "“Compelling... A comprehensive account [that] boils down this complex tragedy... While devastating, this account is also inspiring in its coverage of the role of Flint’s ‘lionhearted residents’ and their grassroots activism, community organizing, and independent investigation... This extremely informative work gives an authoritative account of a true American urban tragedy that still continues.”

Ford Presidential Library - North Campus

The Ford Presidential Library hosts speakers on a variety of topics and on November 28th will be presenting "Inside Camp David: The Private World of the Presidential Retreat." We will be taking the bus to North Campus to attend this event and will be meeting in the lobby at 6:20 to leave.

More information on the speaker series: "Camp David is American diplomacy's secret weapon. The home of the 2015 GCC and 2012 G8 summits, the 2000 Middle East Peace Summit, and the 1978 Peace Accords, the camp has played a vital role in American history over the past century, inviting Presidents and international leaders alike to converge, converse, and, perhaps most importantly, relax. With a peaceful mountaintop setting, crucially removed from the constant scrutiny of the press, Camp David has served as both a site of critical diplomacy and unparalleled tranquility. Hear Mr. Giorgione's first hand account of this exclusive retreat."
